On 11/15/06, Lincoln Gifford was walking toward his attic to show a neighbor something. On the steps sat his Bible. The neighbor asked about that special book, and eight weeks later an amazing baptism took place.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and will all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself. . . . And who is my neighbor?” Luke 10:27-29
Kevin and Carrie Dorse had lived five houses down from the Giffords for a while. They had briefly met at their annual, block party/cookout. However, God has an amazing way of crossing paths and changing lives.
From that meeting at the steps on – Kevin, Lincoln and a host of other men began to study the Bible. Kevin is a zealous man who throws himself wholeheartedly into what he does. He did it in the world. Now he was doing it with God’s word. There were issues and questions and challenges, but everyone (including his wife and two beautiful children – Zoe and Maxwell) marveled at the changes that took place.
It all culminated (well, really it all now begins) on Wednesday night, January 10, as a repentant and faithful man went into the waters of baptism. Inspirational sharing from Lincoln, Frank Parra, Steve Oberle and Carrie preceded the immersion. Kevin’s mother-in-law, friend Chris and children were in attendance, with many others as well, for this monumental moment. Kevin not only shared gratitude to God, but added how proud he was to see his wife and children really learning to love and walk with God.
So, who is your neighbor? Well, the Bible says it is anyone in need in help. But one of those neighbors might even be a neighborhood neighbor like Kevin.
